# Death of Æthelflæd (918)

Æthelflæd died after establishing strong Mercian authority against the Vikings. Within the broader Vikings & Unification period, Scandinavian invasion and settlement transformed the political map while Wessex and its allies built the institutions of a unified English kingdom.
