# Alfred's educational and legal reforms (890)

Alfred sponsored translations, learning and a law code while strengthening fortified towns known as burhs. Within the broader Vikings & Unification period, Scandinavian invasion and settlement transformed the political map while Wessex and its allies built the institutions of a unified English kingdom.
