# Alfred's educational and legal reforms (890)

Alfred sponsored translations, learning and a law code while strengthening fortified towns known as burhs. Within the broader Vikings & Unification period, Scandinavian invasion and settlement transformed the political map while Wessex and its allies built the institutions of a unified English kingdom. This event is placed at c. 890 in the chronology so it can be read alongside the political, military, social and cultural changes around it. These reforms helped create institutions that later West Saxon kings used to unify England.
