# John submits to the papacy (1213)

John accepted Stephen Langton and surrendered his kingdoms to the pope as papal fiefs before receiving them back. Within the broader Norman & Angevin Britain period, Norman conquest, cross-Channel lordship and royal reform created a new aristocracy and a more centralized monarchy.
