Book 2, Chapter 9, Edward 975 AD to 1016 AD – Ethelred
In connexion with this coronation, Dunstan is reported to have uttered a malediction, prophesying the woes which were impending over the country, thus acting up to his old reputation. It did not, however, require uncommon sagacity to perceive, that troublous times were coming upon England, with an imbecile monarch, factions in the country, a mixed population, a growing hierarchy, and hordes of pirates infesting the narrow seas. Whether the archbishop predicted calamity or not, his influence had reached its height, and now began to wane, and although he survived for nine years after this, he was no longer what he had been during the reign of Edgar.
